Chic Re <<Does anyone have a clue what AMD is up to tommorrow at LinuxWorld?>>

Well, of course they will be promoting the Hammer. I also expect to hear an announcement of support from a small Linux vendor.

I think Sanders is also interviewing on ON24 on Wednesday, that should also be about the Hammer.

AMD needs Sun, and hopefully Sun also needs AMD.

Chic

could it be gnome related :-)) (Gnome that's a real name that one can relate to vs coppersomthing or athlon):

05:15pm EDT 14-Aug-00 Goldman Sachs (NEWYORK) MSFT RHAT ACTION
MSFT,RHAT : FULL ACTION in the P.M. - U.S.
...................................................................................
* LinuxWorld Conference and Expo will begin today in San Jose. The most significant announcement is likely to be the formation of the Gnome Foundation. The Gnome software has been gaining momentum as a desktop user interface similar to Windows and as a standard development environment. HP, IBM, and Sun are expected to support this initiative. Sun's Star Office desktop productivity software is to run on this platform, and Sun will reportedly adopt Gnome as its standard desktop user interface for its Solaris operating system. We believe the Gnome effort is an important consolidation effort that will begin to build competition on the desktop, but a steep climb against entrenched MSFT.
* Linux has traditionally gained traction as a server operating system for applications including ISP's and Web based applications. Linux has lacked wide availability of applications, 24X7 support services, consistent documentation on a global basis, and higher end scalability. It is however, reliable and open source so vendors can make modifications as they desire. The infrastructure of applications and breadth of support services is growing. It has gained most ground in the server market and increasingly in the embedded systems market. To compete on the desktop, there has not been a common user interface similar to Windows or quality personal productivity software similar to Microsoft's Office. It is in this latter category that we expect some significant progress to be announced this week.
* The NY Times reports that IBM, Compaq, HP, Sun and several other major computer vendors will announce support tomorrow for the expected creation of the Gnome Foundation - consolidation of efforts among various Linux organizations around a common graphical user interface similar to Windows. The organization is expected to announce a set of initiatives and unified user interface and set of personal productivity programs intended to compete as a free alternative to Microsoft Windows and Office.

chic,

re:Linux/AMD up too?

I had posted earlier that I found a post where someone with a SUSE email address was working with another on a problem they noticed while working on a x86-64 compiler.

Message 14190860

This article mentions RedHat and SUSE.
(thanks to "ytnh" on yahoo thread)

Of course I may be reporting on their story of reporting on my post.
