GMST--Gemstar's profit doubles on sales of TV guides

PASADENA, Calif.--Gemstar-TV Guide International, the largest U.S. distributor of television program guides, said its fiscal first-quarter profit doubled on higher sales of its TV directories.

Net income in the quarter ended that June 30 rose to $28.9 million, or 12 cents a share, from $14.4 million, or 6 cents a share, from the same period a year ago. Per-share results include a 2-for-1 stock split in December. Sales for the quarter rose 40 percent to $63.2 million vs. $45.1 million a year earlier.

Results exclude revenue from TV Guide, which was acquired after the quarter ended. Sans TV Guide, the Pasadena, Calif.-based company was forecast to earn 10 cents a share in the quarter, the average of five analysts surveyed by First Call/Thomson Financial.

Gemstar acquired TV Guide for $14.9 billion last month. The purchase made the company the largest distributor of guides to help viewers find TV programs by category, time and date on digital TV, which has hundreds of channels.

The company also sells VCR-Plus software and electronic books
