Sunnyvale, California, Aug. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc., Intel Corp.'s biggest rival in the market for personal-computer processors, cut prices on its chips by as much as 44 percent as production increased.

Advanced Micro also said its new 1.1-gigahertz chip, which debuts in PCs in two weeks, will cost $853 each in lots of 1,000.

The company gained business as Intel had trouble shipping enough high-end processors to meet demand during the first half of the year. Advanced Micro stepped up the competition by beating Intel earlier this year with speedier chips. Advanced Micro said it's making more chips in volume now, allowing it to cut prices.

The Sunnyvale, California-based company lowered the price on a 1GHz Athlon chip to $612 from $990. Intel declined to comment on whether it would drop prices. Intel's 1GHz Pentium III now costs $990.

Advanced Micro cut the cost on a 950-megahertz chip to $460 from $759 and on a 900MHz device to $350 from $589. Its 850MHz chip was cut to $282 from $507, while the price of an 800MHz chip was lowered to $215 from $359.

The company's Duron processors at speeds of 700MHz now cost $138, from $192 previously. Chips running at 650MHz cost $103 compared with $154, and 600MHz chips were reduced to $79 from $112.

Advanced Micro shares rose 6 to 63 on the New York Stock Exchange. They've more than doubled this year. Intel rose 3 1/8 to 66 15/16.

The "disappointing" was apparently a misquote--check the NTAP thread.
