Glentel installs satellite communications system for Hudson Bay Railway

08/14/00 TSE Stock Symbol: GLN
BURNABY, BC, Aug. 14 /CNW-PRN/ - Glentel Inc, a leader in integrated satellite solutions, has been awarded the contract to provide satellite communications to Hudson Bay Railway (HBR). Glentel is providing a central dispatch function at Rail Traffic Control and satellite radios for all of HBR's locomotives and vehicles.

Ron Fetterly, General Manager of HBR, stated that one of the issues with the existing network was that they could lose communication in an entire area, resulting in major train delays. ``The new system is much more reliable and will allow us to provide better service to our customers on a more consistent basis. In addition, the Glentel satellite system can also provide fax and e-mail capabilities from remote locations and vehicles.''

Utilizing the Glentel satellite system, train crews and track forces will have a more expedient way of contacting Rail Traffic Control through a standby channel and will be able to transmit multi-group communications that will allow a safer, more efficient operation. Among enhanced features to be added in the future is the system's ability to continue to track locomotive operations while, at the same time, transmitting alarms in response to emergency situations such as the unintentional shutdown of a parked locomotive during cold weather.

``HBR operations are now in compliance with Transport Canada requirements,'' Fetterly said, ``and will allow us to realize annual savings of approximately $70,000.''

HBR is part of a North American group of short line railroads that includes over 300 locomotives, covering 2,800 miles of track.

Glentel is an international wireless service provider operating over 240 terrestrial sites while utilizing its fixed and mobile satellite communications network to provide its customers with North American-wide wireless data and voice solutions. It operates 33 locations integrating products and services utilizing mobile two-way radio, dispatch, data, satellite, paging, cellular and PCS to meet the needs of a broad range of customer applications. Glentel is an authorized dealer for WiLan, Rogers AT&T, Fido (Microcell), Clearnet PCS, Clearnet MIKE network, Motorola, MSAT, Globalstar Canada and Globalstar USA.

Does this post mean points for G*?

BobRE,

I'd like to add a fourth possibility to your list. Total VSAT-GEO sat based telephony systems costs are appreciably lower than G*-Schlumberger solutions rural payphones. I have no cost data on either system so any clarification would be greatly appreciated. I still believe cost not quality or technical superiority is the most important factor for successfully deploying rural payphones in developing countries. For example, take a look at personal transportation in developing countries: bikes, scooters, stripped down cars, etc. I've spoken on GEO satellite links and hated it. Anyhow, the Gilat announcement might suggest that VSAT-GEO sat based systems adequately and more cost effectively meet the demands for rural telephony.

BTW, RS long time ago suggested perhaps the most cost effective G* rural telephony system: install a Qualcomm fixed site terminal, connect to local power, time calls with a stopwatch, and then collect money.

Best regards.
