The advantage that I'm thinking about (and I don't discount the ones that people mentioned) is owning the platform. I think that we'll see, with iAS, that ORCL has a very big asset in owning what has a chance of becoming the default platform for enterprise software. This is less important for companies the size of SEBL, since they can afford to write their own, but it can make it harder to compete is changing marketplace. Even with the stupidity with which MSFT has managed their resources, owning the desktop has made them unassailable in their space. It may be too late for ORCL to catch SEBL in CRM, but their platform can give them a big edge in the next big thing. (And remember that it wasn't so long ago that pundits were saying that SAP owned enterprise software because ERP was all there was...)
