Very level headed observations, Level Head.

I think the trouble stems in large part from a pharmaceutical industry that is almost giddy at the prospect of medicating large numbers of people just so they'll feel better. The Prozac revolution really seemed appalling to me; Time and Newsweek were running cover stories about people who were taking the pills just to feel a little "up". Did these people have an illness? Maybe only a blind faith in better living through chemistry.

At the same time, we must be careful not to deny the existence of valid medical disorders which require and respond to pharmacological intervention. I have seen several close friends and colleagues go through this, and they were not faking it nor were they eager to medicate. But the medication improved their lives dramatically, and in many cases there was no need for continued medication to sustain that improvement. But sometimes there is.

As for the soul versus the body's computer system, that analogy is always present, for man created the computer in his own image in many ways. Did you ever read Tracy Kidder's book from the early 80's, The Soul of a New Machine? The idea of a soul can lose its bearings in this technology-driven world, and yet that book, despite the outdated technology it describes, contained much wisdom about how the machines reflect the soul as much as the logic of their creators. I thought it was a terrific read when I read it some 15 years ago.

I thought I was being gentle! <G>

I've not attacked the man at all. Believe me, I understand much more about the condition than he or you may realize. What I do not do is try to enforce my personal opinion about this on others. I've not said he was wrong, because I'm not him. I can understand his argument without agreeing with it, just as you do not agree fully with me. We may not agree, but we can talk about it.

It is NOT his decision, nor can a decision alone fix it.

As I said, there are many, many people that believe that to be true. I am not one of them. I agree that once one ingests a chemical, it is in the body, and no 'decision' can take it, or the effects it may be causing, away.

I have personal experience in this particular area. <G>

Regarding soul/brain: two different things, IMHO. (And, I never used the word "soul", by the way. <G>)

Anyway, thanks for the post, my friend! I think honest discussion of these things is good. I believe that the more we know, the better off we are. I know you feel the same.

Best,

TLC
