Heinz, what usually follows the fin-de-siecle world-weariness and materialism is an "Instauration" or "Great Awakening"... it has been called different things... it is a period of turning inward and spiritual reflection, in which Economic Man is replaced by Enlightened Man. A liberated Deist like Thomas Jefferson had to profess a deep religious belief in order to be elected president at the start of the 19th century. Toward the end of the 19th century Nietzsche was able to forsee the rise of the Last Man. And I think that the great rulers of the 20th century have been Last Men, all of them. The typical Wall Street analyst is just an especially concentrated version.
