ATT is just going nuts in the last two days(or their vendors have inexplicably gone PR crazy at the same time). Here's what we've got now. 1) AT & T will purchase 1.5 million digital set-top boxes from PHG 2) Motorola said after markets closed on Monday that it had entered a deal to become the main supplier of digital technology to AT&T's broadband, or high-speed Internet, unit. 3) AT&T will begin supplying its U.S. consumers with Philips' boxes in 2001 with an initial volume set at one million units. My take on it-- Pure speculation but I feel Armstrong is just saying the heck with caution. He is determined to prove the naysayers on the street wrong. He will roll out advanced services come hell or high water and will increase T's top line growth substantially. These type moves almost prove that the cash flow is there for these types of expenditures. Armstrong is not an idiot so he wouldn't be rolling out advanced services if it didn't make sense economically. I know, I know, the naysayers are coming out of the woodwork saying he's going to far and needs to focus on LD business. But IMVHO, I'm of the opinion Armstrong is making the right moves. The cable plant is just to valuable of an asset to let it sit without moving to increase their revenue stream off of it. However it comes- Voice, video, or data. Especially the voice part as their current annual revenues are eaten up due to HUGE tariffs(Armstrong terminology) T is paying to the incumbents. Sometimes I think the analysts on the street forget how much this is. Keep in mind Armstrong is making these moves in spite of the market cap of T cratering. IMO, this shows that the soundness of the entire plan is still intact and appears to be right on target. Like I said, all just IMVHO. __________ After I wrote and posted the above to the CUBE thread, I realized that maybe Philips is referenced twice. One yesterday and one today with different STB counts, but still the same vendor(?). Those multi-national giants, with different company names, confuse me. Even if they are the one and the same, maybe my comments are still applicable. -MikeM(From Florida)
