8/15/00 - INDUSTRYWEEK Names Fifth Annual World's 100 Best-Managed Companies
CLEVELAND, Aug 15, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- What's the definition of a "best-managed" manufacturing company? According to INDUSTRYWEEK (IW) magazine's fifth annual list of the World's 100 Best-Managed Companies, it's an organization that excels not only financially but also sets the standard in the areas of innovation, leadership, globalization, alliances and partnerships, employee benefits and education, and community involvement.
"If manufacturers want to thrive in today's global economy, it's not enough to simply concentrate on generating shareholder value," explained John Brandt, publisher and editor-in-chief of INDUSTRYWEEK. "They also need to weave in corporate citizenship, industry innovation, and a genuine concern for the welfare of their employees. Each of our winners subscribes to the practices that we believe are crucial to long-term success."

Candidates for the World's 100 Best-Managed Companies were drawn from the INDUSTRYWEEK 1000, a list of the world's largest publicly held manufacturing companies based on data compiled by Waltham, Mass.-based Primark Corp. Best-Managed Companies winners from 1999 along with more than 100 additional finalists were considered for the honor by a panel of international business leaders, analysts, academicians, and IW editors. Each nominee also was asked to complete a questionnaire detailing its strongest performance in the areas of people, market development, technology, processes, and social responsibility. IW editors then selected the final 100 based on the results of a proprietary financial formula, questionnaires, company information, and panelist votes.

Thirty-six companies have earned the distinction of "five-time winners," while 16 companies appear on the list for the first time.

The World's 100 Best-Managed Companies will be included in the August 21 issue of INDUSTRYWEEK. In addition, a database of all winners, complete with profiles on every company, will be available on the publication's award-winning Web site at www.industryweek.com/iwinprint/bestmanaged beginning August 16.

The following is the complete list of the 100 winning companies:

Darell: Chinese and Indians together are over 2B people almost 6 times the population of US. But buying power is limited. Cell phones are popular because regular phone service is extremely expensive and connections are hard to get. Equating that to PC sales is not appropriate.
Even though these people can afford lower priced PCs, affording higher priced products from Dell will take time. Governments in Asia tend consider buying American products as prestigeous. They will be willing to fork over more money than an ordinary citizen.
The eggs may still hatch, but let us count them when they do.
