Dan, (Approximately) The Willy pipeline is 28 stages deep. A trace cache hit reduces the length to 20 stages. If a branch is predicted correctly, and the target resides in the trace cache, there is no penalty. If any instruction misses the trace cache after a previous trace cache hit, there is an 8 cycle penalty. There are lots of variations on the themes above, but the general idea is that branch mispredicts and trace cache misses are very expensive on Willy. It is therefore reasonable to believe that the average IPC will be low. Scumbria
