JohnG: "No one needs the higher data rates if they can't use it to provide dazzeling content to subscribers eager to use the high bit rates."

This is exactly why a buildout of high speed capability, including that in handsets or hand held computers, is very important to the success of CDMA. GSM providers would very much like the world to stand still, with minimal and limited content capability suitable to lower rates. WCDMA, the theoretical path to higher rates for GSM, seems to be several years away. Instead of allowing the GSM providers the opportunity to stall, thereby locking in most of Europe and a good part of China into GSM, here is an opportunity for competitors to lead the way with a better system before we get to the point that GSM becomes the de facto standard.
