AT&T Powers Democrats` First `E-Convention`

August 14, 2000

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ via NewsEdge Corporation -

When delegates, alternates, guests and media from around the world arrive in Los Angeles this week for the 2000 Democratic National Convention, they will find a wide array of leading-edge AT&T technology powering the first Democratic gathering of the 21st Century.

As a Primary Technology Partner to the Convention, AT&T has been working for months to assure that the first-ever "E-Convention" is a complete success.

Under the leadership of the AT&T Solutions unit, the networking professional services division of AT&T, the company has been providing overall technical advice and consultation to Convention officials since the first of the year. A major responsibility was integrating complex information systems provided by some 20 separate high-tech providers to give the Convention a cohesive and seamless technology platform.

In addition, the company is serving the Convention in several other capacities:

-- As the Official Long Distance Provider, AT&T is offering a specially-discounted interstate long distance rate to all attending the event, including media. The company is also providing a commemorative pre-paid calling card to delegates and other guests.

-- As Official Web-Hosting Partner, AT&T is hosting the Convention website (www.Dems2000.com) in the AT&T network's internet dedicated hosting data centers. With the opening gavel still several days away, the site is already attracting thousands of "hits" each day. During the convention, delegates and guests will be able to access the web site from terminals placed throughout the Staples Center, as well as in many hotels housing individual state delegations. The public is also invited to check out the site and participate in the convention from any internet connection in the world.

-- As production partner with the Democratic News Service (DNS), the company's Broadband unit is providing technical staff, an uplink and a transponder on AT&T's TelStar Satellite to allow the DNS to provide gavel-to-gavel coverage of the proceedings. The company is also providing a production truck to support Convention officials' collateral television productions that will be broadcast next week. The AT&T Broadband unit is also providing high-speed digital cable connections to some 50 television sets that will be in use at the Staples Center to cover the proceedings. The same unit, in collaboration with Adephia, is producing 24-hour a day coverage of Convention events.

In addition, the company is the exclusive sponsor of the press filing center in the Convention Center and a satellite center in the Staples Center's Chick Hearn Press Room. The filing center will feature Vertical Networks' "Instant Office" -- a special application that allows reporters to instantly link, via voice or data, to a wide variety of information sources and to each other.

The AT&T Wireless unit is providing about 200 cell phones and wireless service to key staff members of various Democratic Committees. At the conclusion of the Convention, these phones will be donated to the Los Angeles Unified School District to be used in inner-city schools most in need of wireless communication. This donation will be a part of the AT&T Safe Schools Program.

Finally, some 50 Southern California-based employees will be serving as host committee volunteers during the convention, working to assure all visitors a positive and enjoyable experience.

"We're very proud that AT&T has been a lead partner at every Democratic Convention of the last Century," said David Condit, AT&T vice president of Law and Government Affairs. "This year, we're delighted to be playing an even greater role than we have in the past.

"Our partnership in 2000 extends far beyond traditional technologies like long distance. Because of our opportunity to bring Broadband and Internet capability to the Convention, people around the globe will have access to the proceedings in Los Angeles in new and engaging ways."

Under the leadership of Lydia Camarillo, Chief Executive Officer of the Democratic National Convention Committee, Convention planners have used creative applications of the latest technology and the Internet to provide easy, more efficient and more far-reaching access to the Convention proceedings. The goal has been to build an extraordinary web presence to create a state-of-the-art, 21st Century "E-Convention."

"This Convention will be like nothing anyone has seen before," said CEO Camarillo. "AT&T brings unmatched Information Age leadership to our Convention, which is precisely why we chose them as our technology advisor and partner."
