The announcement by AT&T yesterday involving the set-tops from PHG involves winners and losers.

AT & T will purchase 1.5 million digital set-top boxes from PHG...

Koninklijke Philips ElectronicsPHG (NYSE: PHG) is a global conglomerate operating in seven areas: consumer products, components, semiconductors, information technology, lighting, professional products, and a segment comprised of ancillary businesses, will provide AT & T (NYSE: T) with 1.5 million digital set-top boxes that will consumers to use them in any home and will be compatible with T's current Motorola's (NYSE: MOT) access system. The deal is another major win for PHG which currently supplies America Online AOLTV services with its boxes.

Companies that could benefit from the deal include C-Cube Microsystems (NASDAQ: CUBE) which designs, develops, manufactures and sells semiconductors, software and systems for digital video applications. CUBE has partnered with PHG to embed its video encoding technology into PHG's boxs. And Gemstar (NASDAQ: GMST) which develops, markets and licenses proprietary technologies and systems that simplify and enhance consumers' interaction with electronics products and other platforms that deliver video, programming information and other data. GMST has a ten year contract with T to supply them with electronic program guides.
