I think the best definition of Fred's syndrome was in an early-'70's compilation of dope humour called A Child's Garden of Grass. Most of it was only funny if you were stoned (which practically everybody was in those days), but a few pieces are of lasting value, most notably the skit entitled "meditation", which has Fred nailed.
