AMD Japan Ships 1.1GHz Athlon, Cuts Processor Prices Wednesday, August 16, 2000 TOKYO (Nikkei)--AMD Japan Ltd. said Tuesday it has begun Japanese shipments of the 1.1GHz Athlon processor, which is the fastest chip in the family of desktop PC microprocessors put out by its U.S. parent, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. At the same time, the company said it has also slashed the prices of its eight other processors by 31% to 47%. The 1.1GHz Athlon is priced at 98,095 yen apiece in lots of 1,000 units for domestic shipment. The existing 1GHz microprocessor has been discounted 41% and now sells for 70,380 yen, while the 850MHz chip is now 47% cheaper at 32,430 yen. In addition, AMD Japan has slashed the price on its 700MHz Duron processor for low-end PCs by 31% to 15,870 yen. The lower prices are expected to help AMD wrest market share away from Intel Corp. in Japan. AMD's 1GHz Athlon is now nearly 40% cheaper than the comparable Pentium III.
