Three site traffic auditors – ABC Interactive, BPA International and Engage I/Pro – announced plans to launch a new site, Audit Central, which will be home to data on Internet traffic.

The site will launch in September and will hold information about almost 600 online audits once the site is fully operational. Audit Central will include page views an audited site receives; which pages are viewed most often; the average number of pages viewed per surfer visit; and what top-level domains requested the pages.

All the clients with posted data have agreed to make it publicly available. By providing Web site audit data on their clients, Audit Central hopes to give media buyers and investors a the first-ever single resource for comparing Web traffic data.

Well-known firms Media Metrix (MMXI) and Nielsen NetRatings (NTRT) already measure audience traffic, but their data comes from panel-based analyses. They recruit a representative panel of Net surfers who are required to install metering software on their computers. The Audit Central collaborators conduct server-based traffic measurement which analyzes all server log file data. This census approach may be an advantage over panel measurement.

In order to compete with panel-based measurement which has until now been the sole source of unique visitor numbers. I/Pro will also begin conducting the first-ever log file audits of Web site visitors. Dubbed the Unique Visitor (UV) audit, I/Pro will provide sites with an independent measure of Web site traffic based on server log-file data.

I/Pro will measure the number of unique visitors to a site; how often visitors return; and how long they spend at the site.

Although it has been accepted as the standard, given the vast number of sites to be measured, panel data may not be an ideal choice. Due to the expense of expanding beyond relatively small sample sizes, Media Metrix and NetRatings have had difficulty accurately measuring workplace traffic, small and medium size sites and university traffic.

But there are reasons log file measurements have not yet tackled the unique visitor. Sometimes IP addresses, which can be used to identify Web site visitors are actually registered by spidering technologies or robots, which masquerade as real surfers. Additionally, multiple surfers within a network can share the same IP address at different times. Thus, traffic to a site could be under counted if two surfers with the same IP address visit the same site.
