This has some interesting ramifications if this type of strategic shift spreads. As the economy gets tighter technology deployment will be re-evaluated to see how it effects the bottom line. Fewer people indicates slower technology spending and more outsourcing.

Fedex may cut 200 information technology jobs
NEW YORK, Aug 16 (Reuters) - FedEx Corp could cut 200 jobs by next month from its information technology operations, a company spokesman said Tuesday.

``Some of our projects are not adding value,'' said Jess Bunn, a FedEx spokesman in the Memphis headquarters. ``We're looking for better ways to serve our customers and add values, so there's the possibility of about 200 layoffs.''

Some 5,000 people work in FedEx's information technology section, including 3,000 at Memphis and at sites in Colorado Springs, Dallas-Fort Worth and Orlando, Bunn said.

Layoffs will probably begin by mid-September.

In the next two weeks employees will be evaluated based on their contributions to short-term tasks and objectives as well as long-term goals and strategies, their contribution to leadership, cooperation in teamwork and performance, other FedEx officials said.

Any employee terminated could bid on another job within FedEx, Bunn said.

For those who fail to find another position within FedEx, they will get severance and out-placement.

The information technology workers develop and maintain computer software and hardware to help FedEx run its operations.
