Well keeping it simple:

1. I don't believe in Republican/Democrat conspiracies. The political benefits of maintaining a period of debt creation rather than debt liquidation are obvious: both for politicians in the White House and Republicans in Congress.

2. Like all exaggerated financial booms, this one was created and maintained mostly because of Extraordinary Popular Delusions--affecting every institution from the cntral bank, the govt on down. At the sam time though, as in similar times past, the concentration of financial power among very few plays a role too. As does polticians decision to ptach things upo with short term fixes likely to explode on someone elses clock.

3. Doug, to see there is a major problem you just have to go back to financial basics and remember things like: what is a stock? why is a stock valuable? What is a trade deficit? What are savings? What is the nature of debt? etc.--basic principles ignored by everyone from the Central Bank on down.
