In the first quarter of 2000, such shipments increased 149 percent to 1.8 million units. In Japan, the growth rate in 1999 declined from that of 1998. A flurry of launches of megapixel digital cameras with about 3 million pixels or more served to get the momentum going again in 2000. More than a million of those cameras with CCDs of 3 million pixels or more will likely be shipped in 2000. Meanwhile, shipments of such cameras with 2-million pixels and more are increasing from a year-earlier, accounting for 60 percent of domestic market shipments during the first quarter of 2000. For all of 2000, the number will likely surpass 70 percent. The growth of shipments of 2-million-pixel cameras is due to a decline in their retail price to about 50,000 yen, giving buyers better price-performances. (108.38 yen = US$1) Many buyers are seeking higher-quality pictures, and more users are satisfied with cameras having 2 million pixels. For example, this year, various popular models of 2-million-pixel cameras reached the market, including Canon Inc.'s IXY DIGITAL. The fast-growing U.S. market now accounts for about half of the global market. Nikon Corp.'s COOLPIX digital cameras with 2 million pixels (or more) are ranked high in the United States. In the global market, cameras with a million pixels accounted for 41 percent in the first quarter in 2000 while those with 2 million pixels accounted for 40 percent. It is expected that in the second half of 2000, 2-million-pixel cameras will gain the advantage. For all of 2000, they will likely account for 42 percent of the market, for an increase of 17 percentage points from the previous year.
