China Overtakes Japan as No. 1 Asia Cell Phone Market

quote.bloomberg.com

In the first quarter of this year, China's cellular phone subscribers reached 51.7
million to surpass Japan's 51.1 million. The Chinese market's rapid growth
started when the government ended China Mobile (Hong Kong) Ltd.'s monopoly
and granted a license to China Unicom Ltd., allowing the latter to charge lower
rates for its service, said Bertrand Bidaud, director of telecommunications and
e-business for Gartner.

Gartner predicts that the market in China will grow to 89.9 million subscribers
by the end of this year, making it second only to the U.S. ``It's only a matter of
time'' until China becomes No. 1, Bidaud said.

Asia's market grew to 170.7 million subscribers in the first quarter of this year, a
47 percent increase over the same period last year, according to Gartner.

Other Asian markets also grew in the period as the region emerged from a
two-year economic recession. Singapore's cellular market grew 11 percent;
Australia, 10 percent; Japan, 6 percent and Hong Kong grew 5 percent,
according to Bidaud.
