Dear Albert:

Re: Sweet spot of P4

The sweet spot of P4 is not 2GHz. The sweet spot is defined as the point at which half the usable CPUs can run at, if the yields are not too far below normal. If the yields are that bad, the number is lowered by using those CPUs as running at 0 that would be present given normal yields (I know this is somewhat subjective). 2Ghz is the upper bound sometime in the future. If only three or less bins are released, the highest bin usually becomes the sweet spot. When a much larger number of bins are made, the number of CPUs in each bin times the bin speed divided by the number of CPUs gives the typical sweet spot.

Estimating that they will release three bins, say 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5 (possibly dropping the 1.3), the quick response would be that the sweet spot would be 1.4 GHz. Only after they begun to show up on Pricewatch, could we begin to see a close approximation to the true sweet spot (only Intel and a few large distributors and OEMs really know for sure what it really is). Using the P3 and the Tbird as examples, the apparent sweet spot for P3 is somewhere between 700 and 750 and the Tbird seems to be between 800 and 900 (although there are some indications that the C0 stepping may now be between 750 and 800 for the P3 and Dresden Tbirds may be around 950 to 1000).

P4 having a sweet spot of 2 GHz probably would have to wait until 0.13u copper or smaller process.
