Jim, one big problem with quantum computers is that any stray cosmic ray can hit those atoms and disrupt them. In order for quantum computers to hit the consumer market, they would have to build some ridicious container that blocks cosmic rays. I don't know how they managed to do it now... probably with magnetic fields.

Don't fall into the trap too easily. Quantum computers don't do all calculations in one cycle. Damnit, I used to know a lot more about this stuff, but almost all of the knowledge in my brain apparently evaporated during this year. What I do recall (I think) was that QCs can do stuff like permutations/combinations very quickly (like O[1] unlike the O[n!] or something like that which current systems require, but my brain got sucked of my knowledge of "big O" that I'd learned from college, so don't quote me exactly or even indirectly on that). I remember somebody suggesting that a QC could find all factors of an integer more or less (well, comparatively) instantaneously. However, I'm not certain that your typical operations, like individual add/sub/mul/divs, any faster than typical cpus.

Aargh, you have no idea how depressing it is to realize that you used to know a lot more than you currently do. Probably the consequence of working at a mindless, dead-end job and being under stupid amounts of stress for dumb reasons. Aargh. :)
