LOL, Rose ... evidently SI focuses ...

...IT'S sensibilities on a very U.S.-egocentric 'cultural norm' and highly-subjective interpretation of 'approvable mores.' (I don't know how to do the accent over the 'e' in the word 'more.' You know what I mean: pronounced "mo-rays."

It's funny that I just came back from staying in West Hollywood, California, where I suspect the 'regional mores' of that particular locale might be a bit 'looser' than perhaps those of an Episcopalian minister and wife in Des Moines, Iowa ... who might also be among this greatly diverse 'Silicon Investor subscriber population.'

The trouble with getting into the censorship business is this:

WHOSE parameters should the medium us to DEFINE 'acceptability?'

The black male prostitute at the corner of Hollywood & Vine who is socking away profits in an IRA and using the SI venue to support his stock research?

Or ...

you know what I mean.

rose...you might Need to lie low for a bit......appears they are checking the pie plate for finger prints....

Canadian PM Creamed by 'Pie Brigade'

CHARLOTTETOWN, Prince Edward Island (Reuters) - Prime
Minister Jean Chretien was creamed in the face with a pie on
Wednesday while being escorted into a building by a squad of
Canadian Mounties.

With his mouth clenched, Chretien, no stranger to
encounters with protesters and slack security, gave an angry
glance at the assailant before being whisked away by Mounties
as some people shouted ``shame.''

As he was led away by Mounties, the protester said he was
with the ``PEI Pie Brigade,'' and that he was upset with Chretien
for ``crimes against Canadians'' -- such as cutting welfare
payments and genetically modified food.

There was no indication what charges, if any, he faces.

``All I have to say to Prime Minister Chretien, is, 'Welcome
to PEI,''' said the student who threw the pie, 23-year-old Evan
Brown.

It was unclear whether the pie attack had any connection to
a Quebec group that has targeted such high-profile figures as
former Quebec premier Jacques Parizeau and Montreal Mayor
Pierre Bourque.

The pie incident is the latest in a series of security
gaffes that has left Chretien vulnerable to attacks and led to
embarrassing situations.

Chretien, 66, grabbed a labor protester by the jaw during a
public event four years ago. Prior to that incident, a
knife-wielding man made his way into the Chretiens' residence
and was arrested just outside their bedroom. Chretien's wife,
armed with an Eskimo carving, slammed the door on him and
waited with the prime minister until the man was arrested, more
than half an hour later.

Mounties were criticized for the incident and later
tightened security at the Prime Minister's residence.

Hey rose: I've decided that I'm going...

...to seek to learn the parameters that define the 'SI Code of Posting Ethics' regarding profanity.

I see, for example, that two of my posts within the past 24 hours contained the words, 'goddamned' and then a discussion of the plural form of the singular noun, 'penis.'

Both those posts "passed the SI Jeff 'morality test,'" evidently, as they still appear here.

HEY SI JEFF: Does this mean that SI 'approves' of the words, 'goddamned' and 'penis' <g> (and the plural, which was determined here to be 'penises,' although that IS a 'mouthful.')

My purpose in conducting this test is to try to determine, as one of your customers, PRECISELY what are the 'official' SI 'guidelines' regarding use of 'profane words.'

I'll restrict the test to simply WORDS at this time ... might address the issues of concept in a later series of posts.

My point is to help YOU determine what is 'acceptable' and what is not.

Gimme the 'thumbs up' or 'thumbs down' on the words:

1. goddamn (and all syntactical forms -- goddamnit, goddamned, etc)

2. penis (and all syntactical forms same as goddamn above.

Then, I'll progress to others that I've always wondered about.

Interesting that you 'leave it up to your customers' to grope around 'in the dark' about what we can or cannot 'say' here ...

But HEY! I'm willing to spend the time to probe the issue with you paid administrators.

Seems like something you need to more fully address yourselves, however...

As it seems that you people wish to be in that slippery illusive business of censorship.

Must also point out your 'role' as a medium is very different than traditional ... as if that's not obvious.

These message boards exist from what would equate to the dead-tree press "letters to the editor" column, of which the publishers maintain direct control of what's published and what is not.

Again, George Carlin's list of 'The Seven Words that Won't be Heard on TV' apply here, IMO.
