Why, you don't buy into the notion that motivated employees make a good company and they need to be rewarded for their efforts?

Rewarding good employees, especially the tech stars and tech project heads, is worth every penny. Intel has lots of former employee hate sites devoted to them. How many Microsoft or Cisco or Oracle or Sun, former employee hate sites are up? My explaination for Intel's blunders for the last year are either brain drain, or deaf managers, since they used to have some of the best.

re:Bad time to announce the generous handout.

is your name descriptive - I am just kidding. That is nothing, Jerry Sanders was taking that much in bonuses only for himself during bad years :-))

You have to reward people for good work plus those numbers are misleading since stock options is not real cash and the value depends on future performance. Those stock option is usually restricted which prevents from adding volatility to the market.

But your note remind me one of the Dilbert's cartoons:
Imagine the boss is pondering on cost cutting benefits and then he realizes that if cut expenses deep enough he would not have to sell any products to make profit

First of all, the "generous handout" was done over Q2. I assume (hope) that it will be done over Q3 as well, but we don't know that yet.

Also, I think this is an extremely good move. I was worried about AMD getting a bit complacent. I think 3 weeks salary can go a long way to keep all the workers in the fabs and the labs and offices motivated and focused. In current employment market, it is important to keep everyone happy. AMD is still an underdog and a lot of work remains.

Very good move for the share holders IMO.
