Final decisions near on adoption of IMT-2000 technology standards
¡¡The candidates for the IMT-2000 service licenses are under pressure to adopt technology standards.
¡¡
¡¡Industry sources said consortia leaders Korea Telecom, SK Telecom and the LG Group are preparing to submit applications for the IMT-2000 licenses, which require them to select either synchronous or asynchronous mode.
¡¡
¡¡They said so far all of these firms have expressed a willingness to choose asynchronous technology, whereas the government wants to have at least one of them adopt the synchronous mode.
¡¡
¡¡Industry experts predict that either Korea Telecom or SK Telecom will be required by the government to select synchronous mode. SK Telecom, however, recently announced the development of new asynchronous technologies, a strong indication of its intention to adopt that standard. SK Telecom plans to collaborate with an asynchronous equipment maker, such as Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Electronics or even LG Information & Communications, a rival's affiliate.
¡¡
¡¡Notwithstanding its willingness to adopt asynchronous mode, industry experts say that Korea Telecom will most likely choose synchronous technology. Sources said KT recently received a plan from Samsung Electronics for supplying synchronous equipment. Although KT asserted that its contacts with Samsung do not necessarily indicate its final decision, some analysts say it may have no choice other than to embrace the synchronous mode.
