She was a paradigm example of someone with no moral compass whatsoever, an opportunist. In her environment, and I have no idea whether that means just her home or also her neighbors but I suspect both, ripping people off is ok. I represented literally hundreds of indigent people, the vast majority of whom lacked a moral compass, lacked personal accountability, and were out for what they could get regardless of how. This attitude, of course, is not limited to indigent people, but most of the people who are not indigent are at least self-supporting, which means I don't have to support them. I think the point of this debate is that Freddie posted the new, revised grasshopper and ant. People who work hard for a living don't like supporting people who are capable of working but don't. You are focusing on the people who are not capable of working. That's not the issue here. You mentioned Reagan, that's a red herring, too. I brought up liberal guilt because you said we need to take care of disadvantaged people so they won't rise up and start a revolution. If they aren't capable of working, they aren't capable of overthrowing society, a fortiori. Freddie's parable points out that, while we don't have to worry about the disadvantaged causing a revolution, we do have to worry about a new class of bloodsuckers, who work for the government and foundations and siphon off their own share of blood before they give the leftovers to the disadvantaged, spouting slogans and pieties all the while. Of course these people are going to resist like hell if we try to change things, because they have never held an honest job in their lives. They benefit by maintaining the status quo. And things aren't getting better, are they? They seem to be getting worse. This is the richest this country has ever been, with more jobs than ever before, and the distance between wealth and poverty has become more extreme.
