MetaStock has two programs out there: the End of Day version and the Real Time Version (MS Pro). It sounds to me like you have MS Pro without a data vendor. You need an account with e-signal or some such real-time vendor to use Intraday charts. (You need SOME kind of data vendor to get current data for End of Day charts, or are you putting in the information manually?). Then with MS Pro you get a choice of using "local data" (end of day data stored on your hard disk) or data from an on-line provider for intraday.
