HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

ProductId

On Win2000, the product ID stored in the registry matches what's displayed when I bring up the settings/control panel/system screen. But that isn't the same as the Product KEY printed on the back of my CD.

I thought the Product KEY was what's needed to re-install. ( not the ID ) ???

Thank you all for your help. I ended up using my win95 compaq restore disk on my aptiva. Despite a system that was at least two years newer than it Bill gates's software did just find working on machine with software optimized for compaq hardware. After I got done with the install win95 lost the cd-rom it installed from so that was a minor problem. After that was resolved (msdex) I upgraded to win98 and besides having to get a custom modem driver its doing pretty good. I do miss having the pre-installed software though. I did get a friends win98 code but I used the about windows option from control pannel and that effort wasn't sucessful. So thanks again everybody !
