Dan,

but the Register was the first to spot slick Willy sprouting 50 new pins, which was of course greeted by the usual mockery by allegedly "in the know" Intel employees. Whatever.

As was my speculation about the built in Northbridge in Willy 2. Here is something (in english) from Aces site, who got it from the Dutch site:

-At the end of September, the 423 pin Pentium 4 will launched at 1.5 GHz with a 400 MHz FSB
-A Pentium 4 with 479 or 478 pins, will be launched in February 2001, and will feature an integrated northbridge, which will support only one type of memory, most likely RAMBUS. Integration of the northbridge in the CPU die will reduce the latency of the memory system significantly, the weakest point of RAMBUS.

I think integrated Northbridge is the only way to make RDRAM performance more appealing. On the other hand, if Rambus self-destructs, Willy 2 (with RDRAM Northbridge) would suffer greatly.
