You will never need to give what I think is necessary- and my conscience has nothing to do with it- is yours uneasy- that you must repeatedly bring conscience into the discussion? It's merely what I think is the logical way to get to the civilization I would like to live in. But no one has the political will (liberal or conservative) to do anything on the scale that is necessary for people who really don't represent a voting block. I am VERY glad I have so much, and feel no guilt about my good fortune. To make my life even better I think about what would improve the society I live in- because like the air I breath, it is something I have to come into contact with- and more importantly my children will come into contact with.

The safety net IN YOUR OPINION shouldn't be geared toward what generous members of society think is fitting. Please don't classify me as generous- because I'm not, and I don't agree with generosity per se. What I think is fitting is based on what I think will give me the safest most peaceful society- for the money. I don't like the way money is being wasted now. Either spend more and do something- or take some smart weapons and kill the people in the inner cities. As a utilitarian humanist I opt for the do something approach.

And try to stop thinking of the government as an entity that isn't composed of people. It is people. That's all it is.

BTW- you don't think Jesus would have asked the government to do something? I'm guessing HE would have had his own lobbying group- maybe even TAX FREE status- you don't think you are paying for that? We pay for all the churches indirectly, by giving them tax free status in their businesses- and quite frankly they don't seem to be doing enough to be worth the money. I'm not sure they will fare very well when I rule the world.
