I flew a small plane in the caribbean for some time back in the 80s. I sure would have had a G phone if available. Safety first and then the local phone services and hotel phone systems were so unreliable and expensive. The raft was a weight problem, not a phone.

Update to my note that I had never seen any reference to G* in General Aviation press. GA = small, personal aviation. The latest issue of Aviation Consumer notes that an airplane kit is available at $5000. It's interesting that the company originally developped the kit for Iridium, and has adapted to G*.
