I've used the setup you describe with a first generation iMac (233mhz, 96mgs) and Win95. It works ok.

A friend has a G3 300mhz with 128mgs same setup and it's fine. I'll bet a G4 or even the new 500mhz iMac (with an added larger, say 19in, monitor) would be very nice.

I'm currently using a P3, Win98SE and 128mgs which is very stable and works great. I use the iMac as a backup. I love the MacOS, but prefer certain features of the Wintel system such as the taskbar and memory management.

One of the keys to a stable Wintel system is to avoid third party software that may corrupt one's system. I only install software that others have tested for a long time with a config like mine!

I have Virtual PC installed but have no idea how to connect to the internet using my cable modem. I called the cable company and the PC guy couldn't help me.

I have an iBook/SE with a wireless modem. I had the original ricochet modem since 1996. Since it is a serial device, I use a USB adapter. Ricochet2 which are now operational in Atlanta and San Diego is a USB device hence no adapter needed. The original is 28.8kbps while Ricochet2 is 128kbps.
Late last year Schwab switched from StreetSmart to Velocity but there was no version for the Mac. I used Virtual PC 3.0 as interface for velocity. VPC 3.0 includes Windows 98/SE. It requires 520 MB HD and 96MB RAM to run and yes it is slow. Schwab finally came up with velocity for the Mac early this year. Velocity/Mac can run on two MB RAM and streaming quotes seems to be adequate even with the 28.8kbps. R2 will be available in my area by the end of the year.
