I do not use conscience as my guide. It wasn't a pot shot- I simply don't understand the fixation. If you use conscience as your guide I don't think you will get very far. Conscience is abstract, in my opinion it is fairly meaningless, unless you care to define it very specifically.

The most important thing for ME is what is in it for ME. And for ME (and of course ME includes my children, which are little extensions of ME, or at least of part of my genetic code) what is in it for ME in helping the disadvantaged is removing them from the pool of people who might possibly hurt ME or my children and also increasing the pool of people who "do the right thing" by making society the kind of place I I I like.

I think your standard is faulty. That is all.

What you call freedom I call stupidity (or if I were kind - which I am not- I would call it extreme shorsightedness). I am extremely selfish. I revel in selfishness. Almost as much as dear old Ayn. Ayn just didn't take it far enough. She wasn't selfish ENOUGH, but I am.
