There are no moral government "entitlements."

Economic success or failure is not the only barometer of oppression. I know many successful blacks who confide in me that they still feel oppressed because of the way they are treated by some of the police, employees at certain stores, the response in certain neighborhoods, the quality of attention they receive by some bank loan officers, etc.

The characteristics that make up racism are not limited exclusively to race. Those same characteristics have been evident in the past -- and are evident today -- against Jews, muslims, many of the new immigrants from India, individuals who choose same sex partners, and others.

Racism and sexism in all its ugly forms has been prevalent throughout all the years -- including this last year -- of the 20th century. Perhaps next year when the new century/millennium begins we can look forward to a century where it will mostly be eliminated. That would truly fulfill Martin Luther King's dream.
