Verizon says contract pact may be reached soon
NEW YORK, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Local telephone company Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ - news) said on Thursday it believes it can reach a labour agreement with its unions by midnight, putting an end to a 12-day strike by 87,000 telephone operators and line technicians.

``We absolutely believe we can reach a contract agreement and that we can do that today. We have a good, even generous, contract proposal in front of each of the two unions,'' said Verizon spokesman Eric Rabe.

Some union negotiators on Wednesday threatened to abandon contract talks at midnight on Thursday unless the two sides reach a contract agreement that resolves disputes over working conditions, job security and mandatory overtime.

Most of Verizon's 27 million customers from Maine to Virginia have had basic telephone service and Internet access since the strike began on Aug. 6.

The company has suffered some outages and service delays due to vandalism and storms. Two striking Verizon technicians on Thursday allegedly cut an electrical cable that they mistakenly believed to be a telephone wire, media reports said. Verizon declined to comment on the incident, but said the two men were hospitalized in critical condition with severe burns.
