I recently returned from a trip to Paris. After research, I booked package with an airline in March. In April, I made sure that we got our passports, before distractions intervened. Before I left, I exchanged a lot of currency at the American Express office. I read guidebooks, brushed up a bit on my French, looked over some websites, and sketched out rough plans for how we would spend the week. Since I was busy planning ahead, I was not living the fullness of each moment, and since I was planning, I was taking steps to reduce risk. Furthermore, once on my way, I spent a lot of time in lines, or merely trying to soothe aches and pains by sitting for a spell. I did not have infinite reserves of energy, so I took some time to go back to the room and nap on occasion. However, because of the trouble and tedium and planning, my family and I had a good trip, and came home with comparatively little trouble.........

Concern for the welfare of those one loves is a rational part of one's selfish interests. If a man who is passionately in love with his wife spends a fortune to cure her of a dangerous illness, it would be absurd to claim that he does it as a "sacrifice" for her sake, not his own, and that it makes no difference to him personally and selfishly, whether she lives or dies.
