Scrapps,
What we need is a DSL discussion forum.

I know WSTL has made varying CPE solutions along varying criteria they deem the "best" for their business model. I have seen their TI as well as ADI modems. If they've gone with Virata, which for me came out of left field, it tells me Virata knows what's up or has something special to offer. The reports in the field indicate that the WSTL solution is the most robust with the least problems. WSTL is restricting its broadband products to external CPE and IAD. They feel the internal modems and nic cards are and will be commodity items and not where they want to be.

WSTL has always competed as well as partnered with Alcatel -- their best ally, and their most formitable competitor. They have first priority on ALA chips, which soon may be a moot point. Their CO deployment with British Telecom via Fujitsu is for 1/2 of the CO office DSLAMs and CPE, the other 1/2 was awarded to ALA. Indications are that WSTL will also get GTE CO.

I haven't been following ADI and AWRE sufficiently. Where does VRTA fit in with them and what does it mean to future generations of DSL technology? I know WSTL is a leading member of the OpenDSL initiative of which ADI as well as CSCO and TI are members but AWRE is not (http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/000807/il_wstl_ds.html.; opendsl.org The forthcoming "major" announcement you alluded too I find intriguing.

All the best,
Michael
