The pressure from the spring is very different than a pound of metal being attached to the board. Every time a computer is turned around there is jerk to the package.

The pressure needed if the heatsink is not perfectly flat, there is more pressure on one end which may result in cracking.

PS: Am I the only one who hates the springs on the heatsinks? I have seen some heatsinks that have screws attached to the springs that can be tighten with a screwdriver. I hate using my bare hands on the springs.
