This discussion of self installs reminds me of the early days setting up regular modems. It used to be a very painful process with win 3.1. You had to download and install a shareware winsock, usually trumpet, which would crash every other time you cranked it up and then get through some very rude and arcane and hidden settings dialogs. Once that was done you would dial up and get nothing. After tweaking the AT string for an hour or so you might get a 2400 baud connection. Yeah baby!

The self install issue for cable modmes will someday be a thing of the past. I suppose the question is when. Hopefully in time for ATHM to rise and ride the wave of broadband. The last numbers I heard were 6% of all home and business users have access to braodband. That was a year ago, maybe were at 8% now. The room to grow is huge. It is very early in the broadband game.
