Tomato, I replaced my e-mouse with a $20 Logitech mouse. It came with software. Also replaced modem [still working] with a hardware modem [Hayes]. The emachine still works OK.

Sounds like you're having some problems with ie5. Have you tried uninstalling it? Go to control panel/add remove programs and highlight ie5 and click on remove button. That will bring up a window with the options of removing and returning to your previous configuration (ie5 I presume) or repairing 5.5. Try repairing it and if you get an unrepairable message then go ahead and return to your previous version and try downloading and installing again. I personally have tried 5.5 a few times but never have been able to get it to operate as well as 5.01 did for me.

YMMV
