Jury Orders Oracle To Pay $2.66 Million To Fired Vice President
================================================================
SAN FRANCISCO -(Dow Jones)- Oracle Corp.'s former vice president Sandy
Baratta was awarded $2.66 million by a jury finding in her favor in a
wrongful termination suit.
Baratta claimed the software company fired her after she questioned
whether Oracle (ORCL) illegally obtained access to software from
competitor SAP AG (SAP).
Oracle plans an appeal, according to an Oracle spokeswoman, who denied
all of Baratta's allegations and said she was fired for her
"inappropriate treatment" of her staff.
A spokesman at SAP said the company was aware of the lawsuit, but
further information from SAP wasn't immediately available.
Baratta's attorney, Alan Exelrod, said the jury also found that Oracle
retaliated against Baratta after she complained about remarks about
pregnant executives made to her by Executive Vice President Gary Bloom.
Baratta was five months pregnant when she was fired. The remarks in
question were made by Bloom before he knew Baratta was pregnant, Exelrod
said.
Baratta, Oracle's former vice president of global alliances, was fired
in April 1999 by Bloom after she raised concerns with him about SAP
software access, Exelrod said.
The suit was filed in June 1999 in San Francisco Superior Court.
