I was glancingly familiar with memes and considered the term in the context of Frederick's, uhm, contributions - but didn't want to toss him a word grenade with the pin still in.

In any case, the memes and mememes I've seen here seem such tender pre-Cambrian things. They're having a brief heyday, like dinoflagellates, but soon the filter-feeders will catch on.

Piece,

LRR

What I found fascinating about the "definition" site (I couldn't persuade myself to get through more than a few sentences of the others) was not the content, which seemed a bunch of very sloppy thought wrapped up in a collection of sleek-sounding buzzwords, but the tone. Reading it, one would think that the statements made were thoroughly proven and beyond challenge. The subject matter was so thoroughly cloaked in self-satisfied smugness that it sounded... well, Smart.

The identification of "memetics" with an experimental science like genetics seemed particularly absurd. Geneticists in training become intimately acquainted with drosophila melanogaster; I wonder what experimental subjects are used by memeticists? They would need to work with subjects that adopt, spread, and discard "memes" (I'm still not prepared to acknowledge that as a legitimate word) with the highest possible speed and consistency. Teenaged female humans come to mind as possibilities.
