Leigh: Good post. I like the article for its substance. I was one of the original digital research's cpm fans. MS blew them away from IBM, with their fast talk. DG and Wordperfect etc. could not match MS in sheer energy and later money committments. Open Source is attracting so much venture money, it is a perfect fit for Dell.
Next step is when ASPs put together powerful applications together on LINUX platform, then LINUX will become not only the choice for smaller servers, but bigger servers also.
Dell has been actually following the old IBM strategy. Let the competition try first. When the idea catches on in the market we will jump in with full force. Now Dell can teach IBM a trick or two based on old IBM business philosophy.

Linux,

There is some work to do to make Linux support better for Dell customers. I've heard grumbling from Linux users over the fact that the drivers that are customized and qualified for Dell machines are not shipped on the machine. They are installed into the Linux running on the machine, but if for any reason the user has to, or wants to rebuild their Linux image there are no drivers (except for the ones supplied by Red Hat which are generic and not necessarily tested on Dell machines). To make matters worse, they are not available on the web site either. The user is forced to hunt the web looking for things that may work. If this issue is addressed I think Dell could have a very loyal following of Linux users.
