To all: a question about transferring data, please....

On an old PC I have an auxiliary hard drive packed with a gigabyte of files that I would like to transfer to a new PC. The old computer has no zip drive. Can I simply remove the drive from the old PC and install it as a second drive in the new PC, or will I lose the files on the old drive by doing this? Do I need to take the drive to a specialist to have the contents transferred to zip cartridges? What's the best way to do this? Thanks very much for your help.
