My oldest son was considered "hyperactive" in the 3rd grade and medication was suggested, this was 1980. I refused and chose instead to first try the diet approach.
The removal of sugar and several other items in the diet made all the difference in the world. An almost unbelievable difference.
I found the Feingold Association to be very helpful in my efforts to educate myself about this issue and would recommend it as a great source of information and support to any parent with a child facing the ritalin curse.
Over the years I have watched many friends struggle with this issue and have been amazed at how few of them are willing to do thework to educate themselves on the issue of diet and its direct impact on children's behavior.
Ritalin is simply the easy wrong answer.
