As I just tried to explain to you, Transmeta is using a technique more like recompilation than emulation. For some applications, this provides better performance than native x86.

All modern x86 processors emulate the instruction set. Intel and AMD processors translate in hardware at the front end of the pipe. Transmeta is doing their translation in the form of a recompilation, when the program begins running.
