StorageNetworks to Implement Network Appliance™ Technology into Its Global Data Storage Network
Two Companies Strategically Partnering in Sales and Marketing Initiatives Intended to Drive Market Penetration in Both Professional and Managed Services Areas

Waltham, MA - August 15, 2000 -- StorageNetworks, Inc. (NASDAQ: STOR), the world's leading storage services provider (SSP), today announced it has signed a strategic agreement with Network Appliance, Inc (NASDAQ: NTAP), the leading provider of network-attached data access and content management solutions. Under terms of the agreement, StorageNetworks will implement NetApp® filer technology into its Global Data StorageSM Network (GDSNSM), to be utilized in the delivery of StorageNetworks recently announced NetPACSSM Services. The two companies also announced that they are strategically partnering in sales and marketing initiatives intended to penetrate both the professional and managed services areas.

The StorageNetworksSM NetPACS suite of services offers affordable, highly scalable data storage services to enterprises that need to attach large numbers of servers to a single storage device or appliance. Customers can easily add storage on demand in increments of 100 managed gigabytes (MGBs). StorageNetworks also makes it easy for fast-growing companies to easily upgrade and complement the NetPACS Service to the full range of StorageNetworks PACSSM (Protection, Availability, Continuity, Scalability and Security) services, including DataPACSSM, BackPACSSM (backup and restore) and SafePACSSM (real-time data replication) storage services.

The StorageNetworks GDSN combines StorageNetworks best-of-breed storage expertise with the leading data storage and networking technologies available in the industry today, such as the network storage systems being provided by Network Appliance. The GDSN is a private, high-speed fiber network that connects StorageNetworks customers to its Storage Point-of-Presence (StoragePOPSM or S-POPSM) data centers, as well as back to the StorageNetworks Global Operations Center (GOC), located in Waltham, Massachusetts, which monitors the GDSN 24x7. StorageNetworks customers also gain greater control and ease of management over their data storage via the StorageNetworks Virtual Storage PortalSM (VSPSM) Web-based software application.

"Our customers recognize that data storage is becoming the most critical strategic asset of their IT infrastructure. As a result, they must carefully examine how they acquire, implement and manage their storage resources in order to support their need for a highly available, scalable and reliable data storage architecture," said Tom Mendoza, president of Network Appliance. "By teaming with StorageNetworks, we can help our customers make the right decisions—while we focus on delivering the leading storage networking solution available in the marketplace today."

"It is critical for the successful delivery of StorageNetworks NetPACS services, as well as the overall growth of our business, that we implement technologies that provide unsurpassed levels of scalability, speed and reliability," said Bill Miller, co-founder and chief technology officer of StorageNetworks. "The Network Appliance technology gives us this ability, as well as the means to separate storage from application servers. This is an ideal solution for our customers because it allows us to put their information on a special "appliance" tasked with serving data at only the highest speeds."

Added Mendoza, "We are committed to making StorageNetworks a successful Network Appliance partner across the globe. We look forward to the mutually beneficial and fruitful years ahead in this exciting and rapidly growing market space."

New software?

Didn't they say on the conference call that new
software would be announced this week? Also, they
announced a press campaign for "mid-August" and I
am surprised there's no new product announcements
to go along with it.

It's August 18, 2000 - 2 years, to the day, since
the 700-series was announced, where's the new
metal?
----

I listened to the conference call again and Dan W. specifically
said that software was to be announced last week (capacity upgrades
etc.). It wasn't announced.

NTAP announced a mid-August press tour for new software/hardware
but has yet to say anything about it. Have these press tours
occured?

Anyone have any contacts that can explain what seems to be a
major deadline missed?
