<<I'm saying, I see no academic study which shows the more specific (company) research, the more the investment success. I'm saying that doing three months research will do no better than doing a lot less. >>
my guess would be, you'll never see an academic study on that matter... it would vary vastly for each and every company researched. for example, if imformation is readily available, it might be someone could make an investment decision in a matter of hours. that's on companies where you might feel more comfortable with the readily accessible info. with smaller, less well known companies (especially, those not covered by any analysts) it might take weeks or months to really feel comfortable with the information one has recieved.
does it take weeks to research IBM? nah. for a new investor to MRVC? probably. heck, it takes me that long to make a decision on a new car, let alone an investment that can purchase that new car for me!

<<That is, the person will be looking to make and hold
several investments over a long time period. >>

Buy and hold, eh?

I can see why you are concerned.

Did you ever notice that that advice is fed to us all the time.

Peter Lynch advertises for Fidelity that investing for the long term is a matter of YEARS. That's advice for YOU, not them. Do you see many of the big players doing that anymore?

Yeah, sure. How much and how fast does technology and a companies prospects change? Xerox isn't the same investment as 10 years ago.

We have been conditioned by market forces and taxes to think "buy and hold", while the people telling you that do no such thing.

It's like Blackjack books where they tell you to always split Aces and Eights - fools plays if ever there was one. Think about it. For a marginal % on the odds they get you to DOUBLE your bet - with YOUR money! If you had unlimited hits to those Aces, it would be a different story. You don't do that too, do you?

Who do you think writes those "expert" Blackjack books? Vegas loves it.
