Intel boosts chip sector

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) - The chip sector got a boost Monday from industry giant Intel, which is expected to unveil its Pentium 4 chips later this week.

Intel (INTC: news, msgs) jumped 4.2 percent, or 2 15/16, to 73 1/2, out of the gate Monday. The super-fast chips are designed to speed up desktop computing to 1.4 gigahertz, fast enough for video to be compressed into data packets in real-time and then sent over the Internet. See full story. Following suit, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX: news, msgs) added 10.18 to 1145.00. Analog Devices (ADI: news, msgs) was trading 3/4 higher to 95, while Applied Material (AMAT: news, msgs) was unchanged at 83 15/16. On the downside, Texas Instruments (TXN: news, msgs) shed 5/8 to 70.
