I am beginning to think we might be better off with a good Itanium chip. Then both companies will prosper as Intel probably will have its hands to full to put a lot of energy into the desktop. Hammer will probably be in the space below Itanium anyways.

An interesting thought. I'd agree that we would rather see the Intanic sink slowly, rather than a quick death. But conclusive evidence that IA64 won't make it in the main stream is something AMD would benefit from as soon as it appears.

AMD is in a very interesting position technology wise. For once, they have the best chip under the current microcode standard. Intel is desperately trying to change that standard. (SSE2 and other "special" compiler needs of willy, IA-64, Rambus) But the first incarnation of a platform which sets a new technology precedent usually is troublesome, and sometimes reveals fatal weaknesses.

AMD has picked SSE2 to include in Sledgehammer, but can see that IA64 and Rambus are duds worth skipping.

Intel might claim that its the early bird that gets the worm. Often in the computer industry though, it's the second rat that gets the cheese!
